Societe Generale Spurs €8 Billion Wind Energy Boost with EIB Partnership
Deal News | Jan 15, 2025 | Societe Generale SA

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has teamed up with Societe Generale to stimulate significant investment in Europe's wind energy industry. This novel initiative involves the EIB providing a €500 million counter-guarantee to Societe Generale, facilitating the creation of a €1 billion portfolio of bank guarantees. These bank guarantees are projected to unlock around €8 billion in investment targeted at enhancing the production capabilities for wind energy within the EU. The agreement, forming part of the EIB's €5 billion wind power package, aligns with the EU's broader goals under the InvestEU programme to encourage investments exceeding €372 billion by 2027. Launched during COP28 in 2023 and set to activate further in 2024 in Germany and Italy, this initiative aims to support 32 GW of the EU's 117 GW target in new wind capacity, a step towards the EU's objective of sourcing 45% of energy from renewables by 2030. Challenges such as high costs, variable demand, and supply chain concerns underscore the importance of this agreement, as highlighted by EIB Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle and Societe Generale's Co-Head Anne-Christine Champion.
