Obton Expands in Japan with ICG Partnership

Intermediate Capital Group (ICG), a prominent global alternative asset manager, has announced a strategic partnership with Obton A/S, connecting their efforts to bolster Obton's renewable energy business in Japan, known as Obton Japan. This collaboration signifies ICG's Asia-Pacific Infrastructure team's inaugural foray into the Japanese renewables sector, specifically spotlighting solar energy. Under this arrangement, Obton Japan aims to expand its solar capacity to exceed 1,000MW over the next five years. Already a dominant presence in Japan's market since 2021, Obton Japan possesses an existing operational portfolio of over 500MW, rapidly scaling towards its ambitious target with robust market-driven support for renewable projects. Japan's push towards clean energy is energized by heightened private sector demands and government commitments to decarbonization, with expectations for renewables to comprise 50% of its electricity by fiscal 2040. This venture is ICG's third renewables platform partnership in Asia since 2023. The collaboration reflects shared values between ICG and Obton, leveraging a common vision for growth, driven by Japan’s significant demand for renewable energy. Legal representation for ICG in the transaction was provided by King & Spalding and Nishimura & Asahi.
