Deal News | Aug 18, 2025 | FM Business Daily

Mitie Power & Grid, a division of the UK’s leading facilities transformation company, in collaboration with Elements Green, has commenced construction on the Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The 360MW/720MWh facility is one of the largest in Europe and is designed to support the UK’s transition to net zero by enhancing national energy resilience. This 71.5 million project, led by Mitie, involves the construction of a significant power storage system, alongside a 400kV grid substation. The system aims to store renewable energy sufficient for over 95,000 homes daily. Beyond energy storage, the joint-project places emphasis on environmental benefits and community engagement, including a 25.7% biodiversity net gain achieved through woodland creation and vulnerable species protection. Project completion is set for mid-2027, promising a 40-year lifespan. Mitie’s Mark Caskey and Elements Green's Rasmus Friis both underscore their commitment to fostering local community benefits through jobs, educational outreach, and biodiversity initiatives.
