Graphcoa Boosts Brazil's Energy Transition with New Graphite Plant
Portfolio | Apr 09, 2025 | Appian Capital Advisory

Graphcoa, backed by Appian Capital Advisory, has commenced operations at its first integrated graphite production facility located in Itagimirim, Bahia, as part of Brazil's push towards energy transition. According to Ricardo Alves, the Managing Director of Graphcoa, the plant, operational from December 2024, will undergo an eight-month ramp-up period to reach a capacity of 5,500 tonnes annually by August 2025. Plans are also underway for the addition of two new production facilities, expected to boost the company's capacity by an additional 60,000 tonnes annually by the end of 2025. These expansions are part of a broader initiative to meet the growing demand for graphite, especially in essential sectors like electric vehicle battery production, refractories, and agriculture. Appian's investment in these graphite exploration and production efforts is projected to exceed R$ 2 billion by 2028, with an initial R$ 350 million allocated for the development of the Boa Sorte mine in Itagimirim. Graphcoa's commitment to technological innovation and environmental responsibility includes an advanced graphite concentration process and a filtration system that minimizes environmental impact. Graphcoa aims to position itself as a key supplier of graphite for both domestic and export markets, contributing to Brazil's strategic role in global energy transition.
