The Fiji Critical Bridges Resilience Project is an initiative designed to bolster the resilience and safety of Fiji's transportation infrastructure, focusing on the main island, Viti Levu. Driven by a collaboration among the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank, and the Fijian Government, this effort follows the success of a 2014 project that upgraded key road sections. The new project targets the replacement of vital bridges that are either in poor condition or at risk of collapse, a necessity given the aging infrastructure and limited routing alternatives that disrupt connectivity, particularly during flooding. ADB's involvement is supported by contributions from its member states through the Asian Development Fund, aimed at ensuring climate-resilient infrastructure to alleviate poverty and maintain economic stability. By enhancing the transport network, the project seeks to secure internal connectivity within Viti Levu and between islands to support trade, tourism, and ease of movement, ultimately fostering resilience against climatic changes.
