Dniel Jellinek Secures Auchan Hungary as Part of Revitalized Domestic Retail Ownership

The Hungarian subsidiary of the French grocery retailer Auchan has been officially acquired by entrepreneur Dniel Jellinek, following the approval of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH). This acquisition is aligned with Hungary's economic policy aim to increase domestic ownership in various sectors, including retail. The GVH concluded that no investigation was necessary, allowing the transaction to proceed. The deal concludes a protracted negotiation period that began in September 2021, complicated by pandemic and macroeconomic challenges. Prior rumors suggested Indotek Group was set to purchase a stake, but Biery Investments emerged as the successful bidder. Despite these developments, Jellinek has ambitious plans to expand Auchan's presence in Hungary, potentially elevating it to the third largest market player within five to six years. The strategy also includes promoting domestic agro-industrial companies. This alignment with broader governmental aims underscores the connection between private entrepreneurial moves and national economic policy.
