BNP Paribas Completes AXA IM Acquisition, Faces Capital Discussion
Deal News | Jul 01, 2025 | Zawya

BNP Paribas has successfully completed the acquisition of AXA Investment Managers, thereby establishing itself as one of the top five asset managers in Europe. This strategic acquisition, valued at 5.1 billion euros, allows BNP Paribas to manage over 1.5 trillion euros in assets. The bank aims to capitalize on its increased presence in long-term savings for insurers and pension funds, along with expansion in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and private asset investments. However, BNP Paribas is currently in discussions with supervisory authorities regarding the impact on its capital ratio, which is expected to be around 35 basis points, higher than initially anticipated. This follows the use of the "Danish Compromise" methodology intended to allow lower capital requirements. The bank plans to provide further updates alongside its third-quarter results. Leadership changes have also been announced, with Sandro Pierri leading the asset management business and Marco Morelli becoming chair.
