Asian Development Bank and Tuvalu Join Forces for Water and Sanitation

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Tuvalu have jointly embarked on a significant initiative to enhance water and sanitation services in Funafuti, Tuvalu. On November 19, 2024, both parties signed a grant agreement worth $16.53 million to fund the Funafuti Water Supply and Sanitation Project. This strategic investment is designed to significantly uplift the living conditions by providing improved access to potable water and sanitation facilities while fostering resilience against climate change impacts. As part of the funding, the Asian Development Fund has contributed $7.34 million, supplemented by the Global Environment Facility’s Least Developed Countries Fund with $4.59 million, the Government of New Zealand with $4.3 million, and $300,000 from the Government of Tuvalu. The project envisions creating a first-ever reticulated water supply network in Tuvalu, reaching more than half the populace. Moreover, the capital's water treatment infrastructure will be bolstered to ensure comprehensive sanitation and waste management, with a focus on enhancing facilities at educational and health institutions. This endeavor also focuses on building public awareness and institutional capacity for maintaining climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene systems. By undertaking this multi-pronged approach, ADB aims to address the urban challenges in Funafuti, thereby contributing to the overall economic and social well-being of this Pacific atoll.
