Aratiden: Landmark Success in Bulgarian Renewable Energy

CEE Legal Matters reported on the successful completion of the Aratiden 100-megawatt photovoltaic project, which stands as Bulgaria’s largest renewable ESG project. CMS, through its Sofia office, played a pivotal role in the project’s development from 2019, overseeing all legal aspects including adherence to ESG standards. The project, upon its completion, was sold to Global Biomet, a prominent Bulgarian energy investor. The CMS team, led by Partner Kostadin Sirleshtov and Head of Renewables Borislava Piperkova, navigated complex legal challenges by ensuring compliance with both EU and national laws, addressing appeals against Environmental Impact Assessments, and managing stakeholder engagement through public hearings. The project has been a significant ESG model, boasting contributions such as the donation for reforestation, installation of municipal solar equipment, and social responsibility through local community support. Aratiden is poised to reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly and maintain environmental integrity with a comprehensive monitoring program. 650 workers were involved in the project with over 20 permanent jobs created locally.
